The Lemon Detox diet is one of the most well-known fad diets on the Internet, but is it safe and effective? Following is a discussion of the Lemon Detox diet and its pros and cons.
The Lemon Detox diet first came to worldwide attention when Beyonce publicized it as a method by which she successfully lost 20 lbs in two weeks. Most doctors will caution that weight loss this rapid is not safe, but the truth is that the Lemon Detox diet is a form of fasting and people have practiced fasting for various reasons worldwide for thousands of years.
On the Lemon Detox diet, you subsist on a liquid combination of water, lemon juice and natural maple syrup with cayenne pepper as an accent. Each of the ingredients in the Lemon Detox diet contributes to weight loss in its own way. The water keeps you hydrated, the pepper boosts your metabolism, the lemon juice cleanses toxins in your body and the maple syrup provides some calories for energy and also makes the mixture tolerable to drink.
While you are on the Lemon Detox diet, it’s important to take vitamin supplements because you will be missing out on a lot of needed nutrients. It’s also important not to schedule a Lemon Detox diet for a time of year when you’ll require a lot of energy—in other words, if you’re doing Lemon Detox because you want to lose weight for your wedding, plan it for a month or so before, not the two weeks before your big day!
The Lemon Detox diet also forbids use of caffeinated drinks or any other liquids really except for water, so if you’re a frequent coffee or diet soda drinker you may experience some withdrawal effects that will be unpleasant for you in the short term. However, these effects are metabolic signs that your body is actually detoxing, so rejoice that the diet is working.
The Lemon Detox diet isn’t easy, but the rewards are many if you can stick to it. Try to get lots of rest during the two weeks you’re fasting, and if you become irritable or fixated on food, distract yourself with another activity like writing in a journal, listening to music or working a craft. Vigorous exercise is not recommended during the Lemon Detox diet because it can lead to exhaustion, but feel free to go for walks, garden, or do other activities that relax you that you would normally partake in.
If you can’t make it through the Lemon Detox diet for the entire two weeks, don’t despair। Even three days of it will make a significant difference in detoxing and losing weight. Most importantly, if you do make it through the entire two weeks, don’t undo all the hard work you’ve accomplished by picking up with your bad habits. When you start eating again, it’s important to choose healthy, natural whole foods, and especially to avoid jumping back on the caffeine bandwagon.
